Introduction to the Bibliography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Motivation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The following collaborative bibliography compiles and celebrates book historical work about and for LGBTQIA+ communities. The idea for this bibliography has been pinging around in my head for at least a year, especially after the success of the previous collaborative bibliographies about South American book history; disability studies and book history; and sonic, electronic, and digital book history. I wanted to make this bibliography happen, first because I think the job of the SHARP bibliographer is to highlight book historical scholarship, but more importantly I think the SHARP bibliographer\u2019s job with the topical bibliographies (i.e., not the annual monograph\/edited collection bibliographies and annual dissertation\/theses bibliographies) is to bring attention to lesser recognized, cited, or otherwise ignored parts of book history. Given everything happening in the US context from which I write and the larger global context, it is my hope that this bibliography\u2014the labor of a collective team of more than a dozen individuals on at least three continents ranging from undergraduates to professors to librarians and those outside academia\u2014serves to assert and validate the presence of the LGBTQIA+ community (or communities) within book history, meaning us the book historians, what we publish, and the arc of humanity\u2019s relationship with the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bibliography also had to be collaborative by necessity. In this situation, I am not an expert in LGBTQIA+ book history or queer scholarship and theory generally; I bring expertise in how SHARP bibliographies are done and where to look for publications. Given the historical and current oppression of the LGBTQIA+ community, it needed input from scholars of the LGBTQIA+ community and\/or scholars engaging with their histories. I knew the needed expertise existed within the book historical community as evidenced by recent special journal issues and the Queer Bibliography conference, for example. After posting the call for collaborators, I was hoping to get maybe five people to sign up to help. The initial response was more than twenty! And while that number has dropped a bit, this bibliography exemplifies the phrase \u201cmany hands make light work,\u201d and it truly has been a community effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inclusion criteria<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Given the large number of contributors to this bibliography, setting out the criteria for including or not including pieces in the bibliography was extremely important. In our initial meeting, the team discussed what was book history and what was LGBTQIA+ scholarship to us given that what we wanted in the bibliography sits at the intersection. \u201cWhat is book history\u201d was guided significantly by my own experience and preferences as bibliographer for the past three years and the set of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) that I use for the annual bibliographies. These 55 LCSH fall into the broad categories of library and archives history; audiobooks, digital\/electronic books\/literature, and talking books; visual and physical book elements; special book types (e.g., artists\u2019 books, emblem books); newspapers and periodicals; manuscripts; printing; authors and authorship; publishers and publishing; booksellers and bookselling; readers and reading; editors and editing; and censorship. In terms of what \u201ccounted\u201d as LGBTQIA+, our discussion led us to conclude that we wanted book historical scholarship involving LGBTQIA+ communities and LGBTQIA+ theory. One important discussion was whether anything about \u201cgender\u201d more broadly should be included, such as feminist scholarship. We made the decision that we wanted to take a narrower focus, and so scholarship about gender or feminism should not be included if it only discussed cis, or non-trans, straight women so as not to drown out LGBTQIA+ voices with this other body of work, even if it is important in its own right. Scholarship on gender when there were engagements with transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming book cultures were included. To put it in the more informal manner of our documentation: \u201c\u2018Queer affinity\u2019 as a personal rubric\u2013vibes are enough!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of item types, SHARP bibliographies are traditionally quite restricted: monographs, edited collections, some exhibition catalogs, and dissertations\/theses. This isn\u2019t a judgement on the validity of other formats of scholarship; this is more in recognition of the fact that assembling a bibliography is a time-consuming task, and no volunteer bibliographer could single-handedly produce a bibliography of book historical scholarship, even for just a single year, if they tried to include every monograph, edited collection, exhibition catalog, dissertation\/thesis, book chapter, journal article, etc. As such, journal articles and book chapters have rarely been a part of SHARP bibliographies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this bibliography, however, given the topic and the amount of volunteers, we felt that we could be more capacious. Following the lead of the Disability and Accessibility in Book Studies Bibliography, we decided to create a \u201cmain bibliography\u201d of the more traditional formats included in SHARP bibliography and an \u201carticle appendix.\u201d (Though appendix is perhaps not the right word here since it\u2019s as long as the main bibliography!). The main bibliography includes the more common resources included in past SHARP bibliographies: monographs, edited collections, dissertations\/theses, bibliographies, electronic resources (databases, websites, etc.), special journal issues, and exhibition catalogs. The article appendix includes resources not as typical to SHARP bibliographies (and that we don\u2019t want to hold future bibliographers to always including in order to prevent job creep!): journal articles, book chapters, blog posts, zines, and pamphlets. Blogs, zines, and pamphlets are a key inclusion, even if they may fall outside of typical academic knowledge production, because they are particularly important to queer knowledge production. On the more academic side of the appendix, in order to make searching for journal articles and book chapters a manageable job, we also created a list of about twenty journals and databases (book history, LGBTQIA+ scholarship, and general humanities resources) to check more thoroughly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In theory then, the compilation of resources should be simple! You just find the items at the intersection of the Venn diagram of the correct item types and the correct subjects, and voila, a bibliography is born, right? Of course, it\u2019s not that simple. When does an edited collection have enough chapters to include the entire book? When should we pull out individual chapters? (our rule of thumb: 3 chapters or 30% of the book) When is something too far towards literary criticism or library science? (a problem I face continually as bibliographer that others got to experience) Sharp-eyed SHARP readers will note that, for bibliographies and electronic resources, some items are not strictly book history, but we were intentionally a little more flexible there to include \u201ctools for research\u201d in LGBTQIA+ book history. At our group meetings, we had time to discuss \u201cpossible\/unsure\u201d items and to reason as a group whether they should be included in the bibliography. This continued group discussion proved valuable for forming a shared understanding of where we wanted to be flexible and where we wanted to be more stringent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, we had almost 800 resources in our collective Zotero, and as a quality check, myself and Kadin Henningsen went through to \u201cweed\u201d items that skewed too far from what we were aiming for. Weeding has landed us at just under 650 items in the Zotero library (though that excludes the contents of the special journal issues and edited collections), which is still a quite prodigious amount. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, this bibliography project introduced yet another new element: a zine! Amanda Wyatt Visconti contacted me quite early in the project offering to produce a zine of the bibliography. It took about three seconds to accept the offer!! In the zine, you will find a curated selection of the bibliography in a more annotated bibliography style with blurbs for resources and organized thematically versus by item type. In Amanda\u2019s words: \u201cWe created a zine version as another way into the bibliography, using a queer book arts method. I’m hoping just having its cover visible in libraries and other spaces can add to a sense of inclusion, and that folks who might not know what book history is, or be familiar with queer studies, might also flip through it to get a quick sense of those things. I’m also hoping it can act as one of (many potential) guided paths into the bibliography by highlighting some themes and patterns across the resources, our favorite reads, ideas for teaching with these works, and quick-linking potential readers to non-gatewalled resources they can dive into right away.\u201d The zine is free to read online, download, and print. Please make as many copies as you want, share it with your class, leave it in piles at your library, etc.!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to use this bibliography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We hope (as with every bibliography) that you find at least one thing that interests you. Between the books, websites, and larger resources of the main bibliography; the articles, chapters, and zines of the appendix; and the curated selection of the zine, there will be something that applies to your research or that you read for the pure pleasure of learning about people and books. More importantly, we hope this bibliography demonstrates the breadth and staying power of LGBTQIA+ book history and people. In a moment when different groups are working to remove LGBTQIA+ people from scholarship, history, the internet, society, and life itself, this bibliography and the resources in it are a testament to the long existence and in-erasibility of LGBTQIA+ people. Queer book history cannot be ignored in book history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
