Disability and Accessibility in Book Studies + Sonic, Electronic, and Digital Book History Bibliographies

Introduction to the Disability and Accessibility in Book Studies Bibliography

Ellen Forget

The study of book history can have a myriad of focal points working at intersections with a multitude of different disciplines. A book historian could focus on art history, bookbinding, book selling, the business of specific publishers or authors, electronic texts, materiality, and the list could go on and on. A particularly new intersection with relatively few works yet published is book history and disability studies. This disciplinary intersection focuses on print disabilities and the book formats that people with print disabilities read.

A print disability is defined as any visual, physical, or cognitive disability that makes it difficult or impossible to read a print book. People with print disabilities will often rely on or prefer formats other than print, including ebook, audiobook, embossed braille, and e-braille. These formats cannot be labeled simply as accessible formats though, because they are not universally accessible and they are not only used as accessibility tools. Audiobooks are great for people with visual disabilities and those who want to read while performing basic tasks, but they aren’t accessible for people who are D/deaf or hard-of-hearing. Braille books are also beneficial to people with visual disabilities, but they are inaccessible to most sighted people. There is no one universally accessible format, because every body has different needs and preferences for reading.

So if every book format is in/accessible to some people, how can we have a bibliography of works that focuses on accessible books? That was the question that Alex and I discussed at length. We knew that a bibliography focusing on this disciplinary intersection would be beneficial to book historians, but we had to consider which texts discussed formats applicable to accessibility and which texts actually focused on disability and accessibility from a book studies perspective.

The following two bibliographies were originally combined as one bibliography, which Alex proposed as being the bibliography for accessible books. Most of the books on the bibliography discuss digital texts with focuses on e-books, audiobooks, and file formats, among others, but very few focused on accessibility, print disabilities, or the intersection of book history and disability studies more broadly.

Alex sent that original draft bibliography to me for feedback, and I suggested that Alex split the bibliography into two: one that focuses on the intersection of book history and disability studies, and another that focuses on discussions of digital texts. As noted, digital texts can be accessible, but we both felt that the accessibility-focused bibliography should prioritize texts that discuss disability studies and accessibility as a main feature of the text. Splitting the bibliography in two resulted in a very apparent imbalance: the digital texts bibliography is long—and, in fact, Alex added to it after we decided to split the two—and the accessibility bibliography is extremely short. Though the list is significantly shorter than any other bibliography SHARP News has published before, we thought the length of the list is what makes it even more important to share. There is a distinct gap in book history literature discussing disability and accessibility, and we hope to encourage more people to work at this disciplinary intersection.

We present the Disability and Accessibility in Book Studies bibliography, which features only titles at the intersection of book history and disability studies. The list is short, but we hope that it will grow quickly. If you know of any books that should be added, please let us know and Alex will update the list.

Introduction to Sonic, Electronic, and Digital Book History Bibliography

By Alex Wingate

We hope that the length of the above bibliography demonstrates that we have much to do in book history to fully engage with disability studies and the concept of accessibility. Merely stating that electronic texts are “more accessible” is insufficient and frankly untrue from multiple standpoints. Reading ebooks or other electronic texts on screens for many hours can cause physical fatigue. I switched to an e-ink tablet that’s easier on my eyes for the majority of my academic and pleasure reading because I couldn’t sustain the hours of reading for a PhD on the brighter display of an iPad. We might also consider that the digital divide means that ebooks are less accessible than print codices which do not require a device, internet connection, and/or electricity. The exponentially heightened cost of ebooks and audiobooks imposed by publishers to individuals and libraries—public or academic—also undermines their accessibility in terms of simple acquisition.

This is not to say that ebooks or electronic texts are inaccessible. The ability to make small text instantly larger, for example, is huge for those of us who struggle to read smaller print in books, journal articles, or any other texts. But we must avoid the facile equivalency of electronic with accessible. The accessibility of a book is directly dependent on each individual reader. Fortunately, we are well equipped as book historians to examine the material affordances of the book to their readers. It is our hope that this bibliography will encourage the field 1) to let us know if there are any book historical books engaging with disability studies and accessibility that we have missed so that they may be added to this bibliography and 2) to consider accessibility as theorized by disability studies as an essential lens of analysis for books.

Moving into the next bibliography, I would like to re-emphasize my thanks to Ellen for suggesting two bibliographies versus a single one. Doing so has allowed me to broaden the scope of the following bibliography from focusing on audiobook, ebooks, and digital texts as objects to also consider works which discuss how the digital, sonic, and electronic have intervened into how books come to exist, be distributed, and received, regardless of whether the resulting book object is manuscript, print, or digital. Hence, the title of the bibliography is “Sonic, Electronic, and Digital Book History Bibliography.”

The books in this bibliography analyze how the incorporation of sonic, electronic, and digital technologies have changed the objects, people, institutions, infrastructures, and practices of book culture from a text’s creation to its usage. Key here is the word “change” versus “supplanted” or “replaced.” After 20+ years, it seems unlikely that the “dreaded” situation of ebooks replacing print will come to pass, likely in part because of their differences in terms of affordances and accessibility in relation to readers’ specific needs and contexts. But there still have been changes in the creation, production, distribution, and usage of books and texts which the below works help us to acknowledge, observe, analyze, and understand.
